Are you a model-builder? Are you a major history buff? How about an avid gun nut? Do you enjoy collecting things, such as small replicas?
If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you might be interested to collecting miniature guns!
What Are Miniature Guns?
What the name suggests, of course!
Miniature guns, or replicas, are much smaller versions of actual firearms. These special guns are usually completely harmless, as they are often crafted out of plastic or hardened clay. For larger models, they are made out of wood and zinc, which is a fairly weak metal that cannot handle the impact gunfire would normally bring. These models can’t be fixed to shoot bullets, but there are versions that shoot pellets or BB’s.
Are They Toys?
No, they are not.
Do NOT treat them as such!
Okay, Okay! But What Are They Used For, Then?
More than you think, actually!
For most miniature guns, they are built with a prop-stand, making them suitable for putting on display. Depending on the scale of your model, you can either display it along a collection of other models, or give it it’s own place to sit. As for where you can display them, the possibilities are truly limitless. Whether you want to use them as display items in your business or as simply a dust collector in your home, the choice is yours to make.
If you’re thinking more along the lines of larger scale replicas, you can do much more with your model. History buffs, such as Civil War reenactors, often use replica muskets and cannons as a part of their roleplay. For a better known example, think of movies. Hollywood prop artists often craft replica rifles that look so much like the real thing that you honestly forget that they’re fake!
There’s even such thing as functional replica guns.
Oh yes, that’s a thing!
Granted, they aren’t typically designed to fire anything inherently deadly out of their barrels. Think airsoft guns, for instance. They shoot pellets out of them and are mostly used for target practice or minor pest control. Some are also used as movie props, as well. And with the power of Hollywood special effects, they can look even more convincing!
Gotcha. So Are They Illegal To Own Anywhere?
Depends on your country!
If you’re a US citizen, then miniature guns (or really any kind of replica firearm) are perfectly legal to own. Granted, if you own a functional replica like an airsoft gun or paintball gun, you’re still expected to be careful with it. Believe it or not, you can still seriously hurt someone if you shoot them the right way with either of these guns. Be careful!
In countries where firearms are technically legal, but are heavily regulated--like the United Kingdom or Australia--miniature/replica guns are typically treated the same way actual firearms are. This is the way it is mostly because it’s a safety measure to ensure that the replica isn’t actually dangerous. Think American schools and their strict policies on bringing toy guns to school. They may be completely harmless, but there’s no such thing as being too careful when it comes to children!
For countries that typically outlaw the possession of non-military/non-law enforcement firearms--such as Indonesia or the People’s Republic of China--then it depends entirely on the specific country’s stance on miniature guns. I can’t personally speak for all of those countries, but I do have a little experience with Chinese gun-law after teaching there for six months. Their stance on miniature/replica guns is a little more lenient than their stance on legitimate guns, as they are often stuffed into the same category as “toy” guns. However, you have to be at least 18 years of age before you can purchase any miniature/replica guns.
Should I Start A Collection?
I don’t see why not!
If you’re an avid gun nut but aren’t quite rich enough to own the much older (and more expensive) firearms, then starting a miniature gun collection is easily the next best thing. A wonderful website to get started with is goatguns. They’ve got a neat selection of models that you can choose from AND, if you join Gunners Elite, you get 20% off of each purchase! Worth a look, isn’t it?
C’mon, you know you want to!
